The motorway service station on the M3 at Fleet, Hampshire, had to be closed during the evening rush-hour on Wednesday April 30 after a lorry that was transporting 16 tonnes of straw caught fire.
Hampshire Fire Service was called to the blaze on the exit slip road on the westbound carriageway of the M3 at Fleet, Hampshire, at 5.13pm, and at one point 20 firefighters from Rushmoor, Hartley Wintney and Fleet, along with ancillary vehicles were involved in tackling fire. The Fire Brigade said the smoke from the fire could be seen for miles around.
In addition to the straw, the large goods vehicle had a 250-litre tank of diesel which ruptured but the fuel did not catch fire.
Four breathing apparatus, two compressed air foam system jets, three main jets and two hosereel jets were used to tackle the fire.
The fire service were finally able to leave the scene at 11.25pm and the service area was able to reopen in time for the morning rush hour.
