Phillips 66 has received the RoSPA Gold Award for Occupational Health and Safety, and was also presented with two ‘Guardian Angel’ awards at the recent awards ceremony.

The RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) awards are open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. The judging panel considers entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Russell Best, HSE Advisor at Phillips 66, commented: “Receiving these awards is recognition of a far-reaching effort throughout the whole organisation. Safety is the number one priority in our industry, so it’s not surprising that safety is the first of our three core values: Safety, Honour and Commitment. We are fully committed to a ‘collaborative safety culture’ across all of our business sectors.

“All staff are encouraged to share good practices in all areas especially when it comes to safety. A key measure of their involvement in our Safety Observation programme is the 600 plus observations raised by staff last year. Our level of involvement and methods of encouraging engagement were considered best practice by other Phillips 66 locations and have since been rolled out throughout the organisation.

“We work with Jet dealers, distributors, contractors and hauliers to ensure they are aligned with us on their awareness and competency from a health and safety perspective. All actions and activities are assessed for the risk posed of an incident affecting a member of staff, driver, the public or the environment.

“We achieved a zero recordable injury rate during 2013, which was an exceptional achievement and was the culmination of a strategy of strong leadership, contractor management, integration of HSE across all business segments and continuous behavioural focus.”

This year RoSPA has introduced an award to celebrate the work of individuals who have gone ‘above and beyond’ to improve the safety and wellbeing of others. Phillips 66 was delighted to have two winners, Russell Best and Dr Nick Tait, who provides occupational health support to Phillips 66 in its Warwick office.

Pete George, managing director, UK & Ireland marketing, commented: “Russell does a great job of ensuring everyone is aware that safety is not a separate discipline but part and parcel of everything we do. Similarly every individual, irrespective of their role, is expected to contribute to the safety effort.

“Dr Tait is a medical practitioner for employees and is well-respected throughout the business, adding value to our operations and ensuring employees receive the necessary support to operate safely within the working environment.”

David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “The RoSPA Awards encourage the raising of occupational health and safety standards across the board. Organisations that gain recognition for their health and safety management systems such as Phillips 66, contribute to a collective raising of the bar for other organisations to aspire to. We offer them our congratulations.”
