The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is expected to officially announce shortly that the grocery market is to be referred to the Competition Commission for investigation. More than 1,000 submissions have reportedly been received by the OFT since its draft ruling in March saying it was 'minded' to refer the market. Convenience Store Convenience retailers believe that their campaign to preserve the current Sunday trading regime is building momentum following the ending of the government's consultation period. In a letter to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Alan Johnson, ACS chief executive David Rae called on the government to take note of the gathering wave of public opinion against liberalisation. Rae said: "Over 200 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion opposing liberalisation of Sunday trading laws." Convenience Store The number of young people applying for official ID cards from the Portman Group each month has doubled since the turn of the year. The surge in numbers applying for Portman's proof-of-age card shows that the trade is much more vigilant in asking young drinkers for proof of age. There is an increasing expectation among youngsters that they will be asked to produce ID if they look under 21. Morning Advertiser
