A device to protect customers from Chip & PIN fraud is to be introduced nationwide by Ingenico UK, following a successful trial at a Boots store in Cambridge.

The ViewSafe cradle, developed by Secure Access Solutions (SAS), is a magnifying lens which covers the terminal, allowing only the customer using it to view the PIN pad clearly and distorting the view to any casual observers, CCTV or hidden cameras. It is also said to have the added benefit of improving the view for the elderly and visually impaired.

Nick Parsons, managing director, Ingenico Northern Europe, said: "ViewSafe cuts off yet another avenue to fraudsters. We will be working closely with SAS to drive the introduction of the device and tailor it for different payment environments."

Ingenico is said to have close to a 50% market share of Chip & PIN terminals in the UK.
