David Roberts, who passed away this week

Forecourt operator and fuel supplier David Roberts has passed away at the age of 81.

Roberts founded the company that bears his name in 1969 in the village of Grindley Brook, Shropshire, first operating a vehicle workshop before acquiring a filling station, and building a reputation for selling fuel at lower-than-average prices.

He invested in his own tankers to supply his forecourt, building up a fleet of 24 trucks delivering fuel to local homes, farms and businesses, including buying groups, where neighbours in towns and villages club together to bulk-order fuel in exchange for reduced prices. Earlier in the year the business as a whole, which employs 50 staff, was sold to Roadside Real Estate.

A statement released by the firm read:

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our founder and Managing Director, David Roberts, aged 81, who passed away at home on Monday 18th May 2026.

Dave built the business with a customer-first approach and, alongside his son Paul and his two late sons, Nigel and Ian, helped grow D A Roberts into the company it is today. Over the years, he employed a huge number of local people and delivered millions of litres of fuel to homes and businesses across the community. He was also always striving to offer the cheapest forecourt prices in the UK, which brought numerous media channels to cover his fair pricing approach.

Dave’s loyalty, hard work, dedication, and commitment to both customers and staff will be remembered by all who knew him. He leaves behind a lasting legacy within the business and the local area.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday 28th May at midday at St Alkmund’s Church, Whitchurch.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Pat, his family, and all the staff at D A Roberts during this difficult time.

As a mark of respect, the fuel delivery and garage workshop aspects of the business will be closed on the day of the funeral. The forecourt will be closed between 10.30am and 3pm.
