The forecourt in question (site has since switched to Esso)

A 34-year-old man is beginning a 19-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to a burglary that saw a forecourt shop ram-raided and its safe stolen.

The offence took place at MFG’s Newby Bridge petrol station on the A590 in Cumbria on January 19, 2024. Ben Porter admitted burglary at South Cumbria Magistrates on May 14 this year and has now been sentenced at Preston Crown Court.

Prosecuting, solicitor Peter Kelly told the court the burglary, which involved two vehicles, required “planning and organisation”, the Westmorland Gazette reports.

The court also heard Porter had a history of similar offending, having previously been given two suspended sentences.

Kelly was arrested after being found in the area by police and failing to convince officers with the account he gave them for his presence.
