Two of the most iconic brands in the cigarette sector have new lines.

JTI is extending Silk Cut with the launch of what it says is the UK’s first super slims crush filter product: Silk Cut SuperSlims Choice.

The new product taps into the growth of the capsule cigarette segment, which has increased by 543% in the past year, leading to a 5.9% share of the ready-made cigarette category.

Silk Cut SuperSlims Choice will replace the existing Silk Cut SuperSlims range, which consists of the purple and menthol products.

The new line comprises 20 super slim cigarettes, with a recommended retail price (rrp) of £8.25.

Meanwhile, L&B Blue is the newest addition to the Lambert & Butler range. Available in packs of king size 19s cigarettes and also in a smooth variant, L&B Blue is being positioned within the sub-economy price sector with a rrp of £6.40.

Currently, economy and sub- economy brands account for 43% of all cigarette sales, driven by increasing numbers of value-seeking consumers, and indications show that this trend will continue. Alison Williams, senior brand manager at Imperial Tobacco, comments: "As we all know, increasingly cost is a key consideration for shoppers. Consumers are looking for lower- priced, quality products from big brands and FMCG manufacturers need to respond to this by keeping their product lines relevant and profitable."
