Production of hydrogen for the transport sector in the south-west of England is set to begin later this year.
Hydrogen technologies company Logan Energy is to deliver a 0.87MW electrolyser that will provide up to 120,000kg of zero-emission green hydrogen per year in Dorset.
The £2m contract with Canford Renewable Energy will enable the production, transport and use of green hydrogen fuel as part of plans to develop Dorset’s green hydrogen economy, using 5MWh of renewable energy generated from an adjoining solar park.
The Dorset Green H2 Project is due to be fully operational by September 2022 and aims to deliver on-site green hydrogen refuelling for local refuse collection and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). In addition, green hydrogen will be exported off-site to support regional applications in EV charging, industrial processes, export-to-grid and off-grid power projects.
It estimated the project could offset more than 2,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent (tCO2e) emitted by diesel vehicles across the region and will enable local stakeholders from Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP) to decarbonise their existing and future fleets.
Bill Ireland, CEO of Logan Energy, said: “This project offers a further opportunity for Logan Energy to use its unparalleled industry experience to deliver the green hydrogen infrastructure vital to decarbonising transport and industry in the UK.
“Our work with Canford Renewable Energy is a great first step towards developing a regional hydrogen ecosystem that can serve and benefit the communities and businesses of Dorset. We look forward to investing further in the region to expand its hydrogen capabilities and help meet the overall decarbonisation goals needed to reach net zero.”
Nathan Ross, managing director of Canford Renewable Energy, said: “Canford Renewable Energy is an experienced, long-term developer and operator of renewable energy infrastructure. Dorset Green H2 is leading the way for the development of a hydrogen economy in Dorset and the South West, and we are looking to bring forward other green hydrogen production projects in the region.”
