Patrick Sewell and his colleague Deb Oxley raise £6,400 for local hospice by running London Half Marathon

Sewell on the go managing director Patrick Sewell says he has got the running bug after taking part in a half marathon for the first time.

Sewell was one of 20,000 runners taking part in the London Landmarks event, including his colleague and director Deb Oxley. Between them, they raised £6,400 for the local Dove House Hospice.

He is now planning his training schedule for the London Royal Parks half marathon this October, and says that he is considering putting his name down for a full marathon next year.

Sewell, who shed 4kg while training, says that he likes setting himself personal challenges, but over the years this has been on a bike. While he has always enjoyed running, his furthest distance was 10km before beginning training for this event, and he was aiming to finish in two hours, 15 minutes. He achieved two hours, nine minutes.

“Training was a little challenging as it needed to begin in the middle of winter. Heading out for runs pre work, or post work in the pitch black, in minus temperatures, sometimes slipping on ice!,” he says.

”Only by speaking to others more knowledgeable, I concocted a plan of running three times a week…easy runs, quick runs and long runs…essentially mixing it up. It was all new to me as a training plan.

“It’s been really good to have a focus, especially through the winter months. It always feels easier to exercise outdoors in nice weather, but feeling the pressure to build fitness and endurance in the bad weather has been really good both physically and mentally,” he says.

He says the company has a “great relationship” with the hospice, with another part of the Sewell Group involved in its construction building in 1990. Princess Diana opened it two years later.

“Ever since then we continued to raise funds for them. The hospice is so well thought of in our area, as it does an amazing job,” adds Sewell, who thanks those in the industry who backed him.

“I must say a massive thank you to the wider industry of retailers and suppliers who supported me. Anyone who had wanted to, but didn’t get round to, can still sponsor me via https://www.justgiving.com/page/patrick-sewell-8
