Work is well under way on Rontec’s new roadside development at Junction 12 of the M56, next to the Rocksavage roundabout, at Weston Point Expressway near Runcorn.
Broham Forecourts has recently delivered the civil engineering and forecourt infrastructure for the services, which are designed to serve one of the North West’s key transport corridors.
The new Rontec site will house a petrol filling station with shop, ATM, customer and car parking as well as four EV chargepoints with the design allowing for more points as needed. Overall the scheme will provide 54 car parking spaces including six accessible spaces, the four EV charging spaces, seven motorcycle spaces and 12 cycling spaces.
Adjacent to all this will be a McDonald’s drive-thru with seating for 76 inside and an external paved eating area.
In the planning application for the site, it notes: “With government policy to stop the sale of new fossil fuel powered vehicles from 2030, it may seem counter intuitive to be promoting a scheme anchored by a “Petrol Filling Station”. However, it would be more apt to refer to the facility as a refuelling centre. The design of the facility will allow for the forthcoming changes in motorised transport fuelling whether this be primarily to EVs with new charging point facilities and technology or other solutions such as hydrogen fuelling.”
The Weston Point Expressway carries over 45,000 vehicles per day and is now part of the main strategic Mersey Gateway route linking the M56 to Liverpool. On leaving the motorway there is currently no refuelling option, without local diversion, until drivers reach Speke 10 miles away.
