Overall registrations stood at 350,518 cars, with consumer confidence said to be surprisingly high last month

The number of EVs registered last month rose by 36.3% compared to September 2025, with the 99,199 electric cars bought being the highest number on record.

Battery-powered registrations were still below the government’s 33% target, however, making up 28.3% of the market. Plug-in hybrids took a 17% share, while conventional hybrids comprised 17% of sales and pure petrol cars were chosen by 37.6% of buyers.

Overall sales were up 12.1% compared to the same month last year, with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which compiled the figures, describing the plate-change month, which brought the ‘76’ registration, as a “bumper” one.

The trade body notes that “consumer confidence has improved recently, and GDP growth been more resilient than expected”. It described the EV figure as a “major achievement”, attributing it to “unprecedented model choice, especially in the smaller segments”, alongside the government’s £3,750 Electric Car Grant and manufacturer discounts.

Year-to-date EV sales nonetheless remain stubbornly below the 33% mandate at 26.2%, which SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes warning: “The UK still has the world’s toughest targets and highest energy costs”, adding that the government’s review of the mandate provides the opportunity to “build on this momentum and support consumers”.

The Jaecoo 7 was the UK’s best-selling car in September, with the Tesla Model 3 second and the Ford Puma third.
