Forecourt operators can exepct to be busy in the run up to Christmas

The UK’s roads are due to see more traffic than ever before this Christmas, with over 24.4m cars expected to be used today (Friday, December 19) alone.

That’s equivalent to 72% of all the cars in the UK taking to the road, and Saturday, December 20 is expected to be similarly busy, with 23.7m drivers set to get behind the wheel.

The modelled data, which is based on a survey of over 10,000 AA members, indicates 22.3m cars will be on the road on Sunday, December 21, 24.1m on December 22 and 23, with 22.7m on Christmas Eve, and 18.3m on Christmas day.

The insurance and breakdown firm says last-minute shopping and trips to see family members will be behind most journeys, although up to 30% of drivers will be headed to and from work over the festive period.

The vast majority of trips will be 50 miles or less, with fewer than 5% of drivers set to cover over 100 miles on any day over Christmas.

Shaun Jones from the AA comments: “With more than 24 million cars forecast on the roads on Friday, December 19, it’s beginning to look a lot like traffic.”
