Soil testing indicates the site was subject to an historic leak by the HGV pumps

Authorities have granted planning permission for EG On The Move to knock down and rebuild a Telford forecourt, but the firm must conduct a contamination risk assessment for the site before works can begin owing to an historic fuel leak.

EG On The Move purchased Shawbirch Service Station, to the North of Telford, from Applegreen at the beginning of the year with a view to redeveloping it.

The firm intends to knock down the site shop, canopy and Greggs ancillary building, constructing a new forecourt, complete with EV charging and food-to-go provision in the new site shop.

EGOTM conducted a geo-environmental assessment as part of the planning application process, and this found “an elevated concentration of a contaminant of concern relating to fuel”.

This was ascribed to “a minor historic leak [that] may have occurred within the area around the HGV fuel pump”, while the site’s underground tanks have no leak-detection systems installed.

Telford and Wrekin Co-operative Council has now granted permission for EG to redevelop the site, but before any works can begin the company must undertake “an assessment of the risks posed by any contamination”.

Should any contamination be found, the company will have to formulate “a detailed remediation scheme to protect the development from the effects of such contamination”, and subsequently submit a verification report showing that any required actions have been carried out.
