Hackney Council has granted Lidl planning permission to demolish a filling station in East London and build a new supermarket in its place.
Unlike most of its outlets, which are effectively giant retail bungalows, the small plot “irregular dimensions and constraints of this specific site” will see Lidl erect a two-storey supermarket on the land.
The ground floor will be given over to a 9,800sq ft retail space, with the 6,600sq ft first floor hosting a staff room, meeting, cash and utility rooms, and a 3,300sq ft warehouse served by two goods lifts.
This isn’t the first time developers have seen the untapped potential of a forecourt in London: another Jet filling station on the banks of the Thames in Lambeth is set to be demolished to make way for two high-rise tower blocks, which will be used for student accommodation.
