Sites serving 50,000 drivers a week were chosen for the campaign

Petrol pumps on forecourts in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire are being used to advertise a campaign encouraging motorists to sign up to the Organ Donor Register.

The initiative is being rolled out at forecourts in Scunthorpe, Hull and Beverly by NHS Humber Health Partnership, the BBC reports.

Some 7,900 people are currently waiting for a transplant, the highest number on record in a decade.

Helen Russell, a specialist nurse in organ donation at Hull Royal Infirmary told the broadcaster the Partnership is installing ‘adnozzle’ adverts at sites that serve 50,000 drivers a week “so we get the message out to as many people as possible”.

She adds: “Signing the organ donor register leaves your family certain about your wishes regarding becoming an organ and tissue donor and takes away a difficult decision to make in such a hard time for them.”
