The main-road site is just half a mile from the centre of Norwich

A local authority’s planning committee has unanimously granted Tankerford planning permission to construct a new filling station on a main road near the centre of Norwich.

The site is on the A1067, described by Norwich City Council as “a key route linking the city centre and inner ring road”, and was a petrol station until roughly 25 years ago, most recently trading as a used-car dealership.

Tankerford, which currently has 11 sites in its portfolio, has been granted permission to completely redevelop the site, constructing a 3,100sq ft glass-fronted forecourt shop featuring a 270sq ft food-to-go concession.

The 24-hour forecourt will host three pump islands, four jet wash bays and air/water/vacuum facilities. Two EV charging bays also feature in the plans, with a further two proposed for the future.

The firm intends to offer parking for 10 cars, laundrette facilities, plus parcel lockers and a small seating area. Around 10 full-time-equivalent jobs will be created by the development.

Some residents had objected to the plans, raising concerns over topics including traffic, noise, light and drainage.

Norwich City Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the development, though, finding that the proposals would “not expected to have a significant impact on the surrounding area”, while ruling that “the proposed layout is reasonable”, and mandating that the site’s jet washes will only operate from 8am to 7pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
