Rontec, which operates 267 forecourts, has partnered with The Royal National Institute of Blind People to raise over £50,000 for the charity.

Rontec raised the money via Pennies, a digital charity box that allows customers to add ‘microdonations’ to their transactions, with drivers giving a total of £52,000 to the RNIB at filling stations run by the firm.

The charity says the funds will support its dedicated telephone helpline, and eye care liaison officers who offer information, emotional support and advice to people with conditions that affect their sight.

Dame Gail Ronson, a long-term charity fundraiser and wife of Rontec boss Sir Gerald Ronson, is also president of RNIB. The charity’s chief executive, Matt Stringer, says the organisation is “incredibly grateful” to the couple, adding:

“At RNIB, we aim to ensure everyone with sight loss can live the life they want to lead, without limits. This means making sure many more people with long-term eye health conditions are offered person-centred practical and emotional support.

“It also means blind and partially sighted people can access skills for day-to-day life and can make spontaneous journeys and travel the way they want to. We can’t do this without generous support from members of the public”
