Laura Callaghan: Those who adapt swiftly with sustainable, compliant, and high quality products will continue to thrive

The UK vaping sector is on the verge of major change as the government is set to ban disposable vapes. But what will fill the void left by disposables, and how should forecourt retailers prepare for the shift?

One key area of growth for smoking alternative products has been nicotine pouches, which have gained traction due to their convenient and discreet nature. Pouches are a great option for consumers who want to use nicotine while on transport and for those who spend large amounts of time in areas that prohibit smoking and vaping.

Another area set for rapid growth is the reusable pod systems; these convenient products are expected to take centre stage as consumers shift to long-lasting and cost-effective solutions. Selected manufacturers have already developed high-performance devices with rechargeable batteries and a wide range of flavour pods that appeal to former disposable users with minimal disruption to buying habits.

Convenience stores traditionally thrived on impulse purchases, with disposables dominating their vaping sections. Forecourts, however, cater to a slightly different shopper who values convenience, reliability, and cost-effectiveness, meaning they should adapt much quicker to pod-based or refillable devices when positioned and sold effectively.

Forecourt operators should act now to review their vape category strategy. It is important to ensure a strong selection of rechargeable vape kits alongside easy-to-use e-liquids, which will be key to maintaining and driving sales. Retailers can also consider bundling devices with nicotine salts to make the transition easier for customers.

The vape sector remains resilient and innovative. It has recognised the need for proactive change, extensive research and development to create sustainable alternatives. Whilst the disposable ban will reshape the landscape, those who adapt swiftly with sustainable, compliant, and high quality products will continue to thrive.
