Confectionery is a favourite target for shoplifters, with small packs easily hidden in pockets. One point of sale display provider claims to have come up with a way to deter impulse pilferers.
Harrison Retail claims its dispensers, which use plastic barriers that make it difficult for customers to remove more than one item at a time, prevent so-called ‘snack sweeping’ at checkouts, where thieves quickly grab multiple items.
“This hindrance is often enough to stop impulse stealers from taking snacks when checking out,” says Harrison Retail’s sales director Rolf Whiteman. “Thrill seekers who steal snacks when checking out will not want the hassle of navigating a dispenser, as it will take them longer to retrieve the item they intend to steal.”
It is a problem that is exacerbated by retailers having fewer staff on night rotas, says Whiteman, who adds that the relatively simple solution often does away with the need for more complex security systems.
