New SpeedIQ pump brings energy savings by varying flow rate based on refuelling demand

A new fuel-pump motor from Gilbarco Veeder-Root (GVR) promises to help retailers save on energy costs and improve customer experience thanks to a variable rate that reduces fuel flow based on need.

GVR says its SpeedIQ motor automatically varies its dispensing rate based on fuelling demand, highlighting that traditional pump motors continually run at maximum speed regardless of how many vehicles are refuelling from each side of a pump.

The firm says SpeedIQ is the first-to-market pump that automatically adjusts its speed to match demand and that it can use up to 50% less energy than traditional pumps, while also being 50% quieter when dispensing.

Graham Greaves, owner of Lane End Garage in Northumberland, a site he has worked at for almost 50 years, has been buying Gilbarco pumps since he was 16 years old and is one of the first forecourt operators to adopt a GVR pump with the new motor. Greaves says he’s “never seen a better pump than this”, adding that it’s so quiet he asks “is that even running?”

Stephen Richards, global chief commercial officer of convenience retail for Vontier, GVR’s parent company, says that “by matching motor speed to real-time fuelling demand, this first-to-market innovation helps operators reduce energy use, lower noise and improve operating efficiency”.

He adds that when installed across multiple sites the Speed IQ motor “can save operators thousands in both kilowatt hours and overhead costs”.

North Carolina firm Gilbarco Veeder-Root was started in 19th century Massachusetts and takes its name from founders Charles Gilbert and John Barker, together with the Roots Company, and Curtis Veeder, who invented the Cyclometer, a mechanical odometer that counts wheel rotations to measure distance travelled by bicycle.
