Moto has applied to North Yorkshire Council for planning permission for an HGV and eHGV parking extension at its Wetherby site on the A1(M).

The outline application proposes an increase in the number of HGV parking spaces from 80 to 214 spaces, including a new 134-space eHGV parking extension; a new primary electric sub-station, and a new access route from the existing motorway service area (MSA) plus associated landscaping.

The eHGV parking bays are planned to be developed in phases with the extension area initially providing parking predominantly for combustion engine HGVs with a small number of eHGV bays. Over time, there will be an increase in the number of eHGV compatible bays as demand for low-carbon freight transport increases.

Moto says the current utilisation of Wetherby MSA exceeds capacity, with average occupancy reaching 128.5% in 2025 year-to-date.

The proposed HGV/eHGV parking and charging extension area is on agricultural land to the east of the existing facility. Access to the MSA will continue to be from the roundabout which forms Junction 46 of the A1(M) with no changes proposed.

Access to the HGV extension area will be via the internal MSA layout with a new access road constructed to give access to the land to the east, on which the HGV extension area will be constructed.

The Local Highway Authority is asking lots of questions regarding Moto’s plans including whether there are safe routes for pedestrians and whether a CCTV system will monitor the new parking area for added safety.

Interested parties can view the plans on North Yorkshire’s Council planning portal or see paper copies at the Civic Centre in Harrogate. They have until October 25 to register their views.
