A new ultra-rapid charging hub for electric vehicles has been opened in Edmonton, north London, by chargepoint firm Zest.
The 18-bay hub is served by nine Alpitronic Hypercharger machines delivering electricity at up to 300kW, with prices pegged at 75p per kWh.
The site is located just off the North Circular Road and is part of Zest’s “growing EV charging network across London”, which saw it bring over 300 chargers on stream in the capital in under a year. The firm previously won a Transport for London tender to install sockets across TfL-managed roads.
Zest is backed by £105m in funding from Zouk Capital, a private equity firm that manages the £420m public-private Charging Infrastructure Investment Fund (CIIF). The CIIF was announced in 2017 with a £200m “cornerstone” investment from the UK government, with additional capital provided by private firms. The CIIF recently committed £25m to help local councils install public chargepoints on roads with no off-street parking as part of a wider £63m investment in EV infrastructure.
Announcing the launch of the new north London hub, Zest’s chief executive, Robin Heap, said the facility represents “a vital investment in Edmonton’s future”, adding that the rollout of public chargepoints “must keep pace with the rapid growth of EV adoption, particularly in London where private driveways are less common”.
