If I were a cynic, I might say that Tesco’s decision to ban sweets from the checkouts of its Express and Metro stores was a PR ploy to overshadow its recent financial failures or win back people who believe it to be the ’big, bad wolf’ of retailing.

And the sugary comment from the Tesco chief exec: "We all know how easy it is to be tempted by sugary snacks at the checkout, and we want to help our customers lead healthier lives", should probably have come with a warning and a sick bag.

If the grocery giant was so keen to help its customers lead healthier lives then surely it would temper some of its offers? At the time of writing, its website had Oreo biscuits at half price; chocolate éclairs on offer; 18 cans of Stella for £12; and 12-packs of Walkers crisps on buy one, get one free. Now that all adds up to a ’healthy’ diet if ever I saw one.

Moving on, and my new favourite drink is San Pellegrino limonata which contains 16% fruit juice and as such has a real lemony kick to it. I love lemons and can quite literally suck on one quite happily.

And luckily for me, lemon seems to be the ’flavour du jour’ at the moment.

The No Fear Extreme energy drink has a new citrus storm flavour while Tango is available in a new aargh citrus flavour which is described as a "lip smacking, eye-popping zesty hit of pure citrusness". Get it while you can as it’s one of those pesky limited editions and as such only available until the end of the year. Actually though, aargh citus has been available before it was first launched in 2008 and then called simply citrus. It’s been relaunched and renamed as part of Tango’s ’annual flavour rotation strategy’.

These marketing types at these soft drinks’ suppliers think it’s great to have a rotation strategy but for me it’s just one great big annoyance. And, before you say it, I know I’m too old to be part of Tango’s target audience but surely there are some Tango drinkers like me who know what they like? So if Tango is available in a citrus flavour and you like it, it’s blimmin’ annoying when it goes off sale.

Sticking with tart flavours, watch out for yuzu. I’ve just had a passionfruit & yuzu yogurt from M&S Simply Food. But if, like me, you didn’t know what a yuzu was, it’s a yellow citrus fruit that combines the taste of mandarin orange with grapefruit... mmm.
