Unilever Ice Cream & Frozen Food has launched a range of eco-friendly fridges as part of its commitment to caring for the environment.
The company has been working with the support of Greenpeace to develop the new freezers, which run on natural gas refrigerant – hydrocarbon (HC) – which neither contributes to global warming nor depletes the ozone layer. It is another step along the environment-friendly path from the currently-used hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) gases, which do not harm the ozone layer but can contribute to global warming.
Wall’s claims its new freezers also use up to 15 per cent less energy than traditional models to keep ice cream at the right temperature.
“The new Wall’s freezers will be recognisable by ‘HFC-free freezer – better for the environment’ stickers,” says Gaby Vreeken, business director, Unilever Ice Cream & Frozen Food, which currently has 75,000 freezers in the UK. “This is one of the first times HC has been used in high-performance commercial freezers in the UK.
