Top 50 independent retailer Karan Retail has added to its growing portfolio of sites with the purchase of an award-winning site in Scotland - Bridgend Services.
The site is located in Freuchie, Fife, and won the title of Best Site in Scotland in the 4mlpa-plus category at the 2020 Forecourt Trader Awards.
It was owned by a small family business, Abbiecraig Services, run by directors Elaine Houston and her partner Steve Cunningham, along with Elaine’s daughter Abbie Houston. They acquired the rural site in 2012 and over many years totally transformed it to bring it into the 21st century. In 2017 it was completely demolished, and re-opened in 2019 with a 3,000sq ft Spar-branded store incorporating a Subway and Costa Express food-to-go offer and off licence, as well as a spacious, modern BP-branded forecourt.
The site excelled in many areas, also winning the titles of Best Car Care & Lubricants Outlet and Best Forecourt Loo in the 2020 awards, a great achievement, especially during the particularly stressful period at the height of the pandemic.
Visnu Kumaranisanthan, operations manager at Karan Retail, which was ranked at number 11 in the latest Top 50 Indies listing, with 30 sites (18 owned and 12 operated), said the company was delighted to acquire the site, having taken it over at end of April: “It’s a great addition to our network – we’re really pleased to add an award-winning site to our growing business. It has great potential, and we look forward to developing it further with additional services.”
Visnu said the company was continuing to add to its network and was looking for sites nationwide.
