Retailers should review which reverse vending machines are certified before selecting a model, says Exchange For Change

Exchange For Change, the industry-led organisation tasked with delivering the deposit return scheme, has published a list of reverse vending machines (RVMs) that will meet its requirements when legislation comes into force next October.

It says that retailers considering purchasing or leasing an RVM should review which products are certified before selecting a model.

The approved list, which will be updated as new machines are certified, highlights equipment which has undergone rigorous testing and meets operational demands, says the organisation.

This includes identifying and accepting eligible containers, preventing fraud, connecting with scheme systems, securely handling transaction data, and being accessible.

Exchange For Change has also published a suite of artwork for retailers to use at their bottle and can return points, in an effort to produce consistent branding across the retail industry.

Russell Davies, Exchange For Change chief executive officer, says that the list of certified RVMs is “an important step in helping retailers prepare” for the scheme, which is now open for retailer registration.

“The list is designed to help retailers of all sizes make informed decisions ahead of the scheme launch, while the new artwork guidance provides retailers with approved branding that can be adopted alongside their own, helping to create a consistent and recognisable approach across the scheme,” he adds.

“We will continue to provide guidance and support as preparations for scheme go-live progress, including through the grant scheme available to eligible small independent retailers to support the purchase of an RVM.”
