RMI Petrol has called on the government to cut road traffic congestion by scrapping all toll charges.

Its chairman Brian Madderson said legislation was ugently needed to tackle problems in areas such as the Dartford Tunnel.

In a letter to MP Norman Baker, Madderson stated: "We have been repeatedly advised by retailers in the south east that the Dartford Crossing regularly causes huge tailbacks which are not linked to ’incidents’ but are merely a result of the tolls slowing traffic."

He added that this must make the crossing the UK’s worst ’congestion black spot’, leading to excessive emissions that will hit the UK’s CO2 reduction programme, wastage of road fuels and loss of valuable work time. He added that road tolls had already been abolished in Scotland.
