A Yorkshire retailer is planning to sell off his stock at cost price and shut down the pumps at his family business after 50 years - due to biofuels legislation.
Steve Fagan plans to sell off gallons of cut-price petrol and diesel at Shiregreen Service Station in Sheffield, which has been in his family for three generations, on August 11. He said there was too little margin on fuel and it was not worth paying for the tanks to be cleaned in order to deal with increasing levels of biofuels.
Steve said: "It’s such a shame but there’s no point paying a man to go down and scrape out the old tanks so they can receive this new fuel. We’ve been thinking about closing for about a year, but this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
"We’re not on a main route and 90% of our customers only put in about £5 or £10 at the pumps. We’ll sell off the remainder of our fuel at cost price to say thank you to them."
The site will continue to operate its vehicle repair and MOT business.
