Appeals flood in
More than 500 appeals have already been lodged by fuel retailers over the new Business Rates valuations with a warning that there are more to come. Brian Madderson, RMI Petrol chairman, stated in a letter to the Exchequer Secretary that the cost to the industry and Treasury was likely to be at least £5 million. The letter stated: "With the flawed methodology producing extraordinary and unfair assessments, we can be certain that there will be an immediate and sustained number of challenges via the Appeal process."
New fuel card offer
BP and Chevron has teamed up to offer a new fuel card deal. It allows BP PLUS cardholders to now use 1,000 Texaco sites and Texaco’s The Business Card holders to use 1,200 BP forecourts. The companies said this meant that the BP PLUS card BP’s fuel card for car and van fleets would have access to the second largest network in the UK, or one in three of every UK forecourt. Allan Abernethy, BP’s dealer sales manager, said fleets were very important to BP dealers.
Petrol sales fall in Q1
Petrol sales dropped by 5.7% in the first three months of 2010 compared to the same period in the previous year, according to figures by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The department stated that fuel sales at UK forecourts had been affected by "poor weather conditions in the quarter". Meanwhile, it noted that diesel sales had actually increased in the first quarter they were up by 3.8% against the same period in 2009.
