Vouchers can be redeemed at supermarket Tesco forecourts, but not Tesco Express/Esso sites

With petrol and diesel prices soaring, supermarket firm Tesco is offering drivers an 8ppl discount on fuel.

The deal requires drivers to spend £60 or more in a single transaction at a Tesco supermarket, with this seeing them issued with a discount coupon to use at any of the firm’s 500 supermarket petrol stations – though Tesco Express/Esso forecourts are excluded from the deal.

The offer runs from today until October 18, with vouchers valid until October 25. It comes as drivers face increasing pressure from fuel prices, with diesel never having been more expensive at over £2 a litre, and unleaded up 42p since the end of February.

Forecourt operators, meanwhile, have been slashing their margins as they try to absorb soaring wholesale costs, with profits down an average 21% for diesel of late.

Tesco’s offer follows a similar one from rival Asda introduced last week that knocks 5p off a litre of fuel when drivers spend £40 or more in store – though Asda’s deal ends on October 14.

Sainsbury’s shoppers, meanwhile, can get discounted fuel via their Nectar card, with 300 points knocking 5p off a litre at participating Esso forecourts.
