The Simon Smith Group has been trialling a system by Greengate Energy aimed at cutting energy bills at its Monmouth site. The 3M Plan works by measuring energy consumption and setting realistic parameters for each energy-consuming device on site. This is controlled via Greengate’s wireless energy management system.
According to Simon Smith Group partner, Susie Hawkins, after just two months the site is saving 22% on electricity, and payback is anticipated within nine months. Best of all the installation did not impact cash flow as the company used a Carbon Trust Loan, an interest-free loan over four years. Susie said: "We already had many of our lights on sensors and our refrigeration was state-of-the-art in terms of energy consumption. The system manages all energy consumed by our assets, ensuring they only use as much energy as really necessary. For example, the chillers storing non-perishable items are now switched off overnight, with heating also lowered to take advantage of the consequent reduction of chilled air being circulated."
