Mahmood Saleem, owner of Jet Ardeer Services in Stevenston, North Ayrshire, undertook a large-scale redevelopment of the site in 2016. The original 750sq ft convenience store was razed to the ground and replaced with a two-storey building that now houses a 2,700sq ft shop on the ground floor and offices, storage and staff facilities on the first floor.
Saleem commented: "I took the opportunity to invest in a state-of-the art tobacco gantry. Our first floor office doubles as a stockroom for tobacco, which is dispensed through an automated gantry.
"All our tobacco stock is secured upstairs, away from customers with staff simply using their touchscreens at the counter to request a product. The product is then delivered to the till point through a chute.
"The system is integrated into the epos, so if a product is out of stock, the staff wouldn’t be able to complete the sale at the till. Each slot is reserved and numbered for a different line and the system is very secure. In preparation for the forthcoming EUTPDII changes in May, we are simply adding another bar code to the system and removing the old code."
Ardeer’s sophisticated and bespoke vending system was designed and installed by Navarra Retail Systems and cost around £11,500.
