Sewell on the go has won planning approval for its first new-to-industry site: a £5m flagship forecourt on a 1.2 acre plot in Beverley, near to its Hull heartland.

The Top 50 Indie sold its Wyton Bar Service Station in Bilton, Hull, last March to help fund the project which is on a derelict car dealer site on Swinemoor Lane.

Managing director Patrick Sewell plans to incorporate environmental touches into the project, which will include a 5,500sq ft convenience store, a car wash and valeting, and several EV chargepoints.

BP and Co-op Wholesale are the chosen suppliers for the 24-hour site, which will have “a farm shop feel, stocking high quality food to go”.

If all goes to plan, work on the development – the second site in Beverley for the business – will start this summer.

Sewell says that he is delighted that East Riding of Yorkshire Council has granted planning permission. The family business has been trying to get the project over the line for the past two years, working with 15 consultants and liaising extensively with the local community. As part of the agreed plans, the facility will be given a new entrance and pedestrian crossing.

“As a local business it’s been important for us to get the views of the local community before we submitted our application, and we adapted our plans as a result,” says Sewell.

”We’re delighted that East Riding planning officers have seen the benefits of the scheme and given us approval – we can’t wait to work alongside our partners BP and Co-op to create a bright and modern convenience store that will serve the people of Beverley and commuters.”

The Hull-based business, which operates 12 petrol stations across Hull and East Yorkshire, is part of the Sewell Group which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. The group is well known for giving back to local communities, for which it was recognised in the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise for Promoting Opportunity in 2021.
