The PRA is urging forecourt operators to respond to a request for evidence from HM Treasury as the government prepares to ask the European Commission for an extension to the rural fuel rebate scheme it operates.
The Treasury is asking petrol retailers around the UK to send it information relating to charges for petrol and diesel by September 5.
The rural fuel rebate scheme currently enables retailers in a handful of remote rural island areas to claim back five pence per litre (ppl) on fuel sales. It is intended to prevent their customers from being disadvantaged by higher fuel costs.
The government intends to submit a proposal in support of scheme expansion, supported with evidence gathered via this call for information, over the autumn.
