David Hatter, commercial director of Top 50 Indie the Chartman Group, which operates filling stations and eight Spar stores in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, is retiring from the business after nearly 30 years.
He first worked with fellow directors John Hartshorne and Clive Sheppard at the former Middlemoor Filling Station in Exeter in 1984 before leaving and then rejoining the business. Chartman Limited was set up in 1987 and today the Group is ranked 29th in The Grocer magazine’s top 50 independent grocery retailers in the UK.
Initially, David worked for spells in the Exeter and Middlemoor operations, as well as the Jack in the Green Service Station on the A30 outside Exeter. As well as spending time within the company’s wholesale business, he later oversaw operations at Chartman’s stores in Bude, Bodmin, Tiverton and Exeter. More recently he had stepped away from some of the field operations in order to focus more on a commercial role in head office.
Fellow director Clive Sheppard said: “We wish to express our best wishes and sincere thanks to David for his contribution to the development and running of the business over this long period of time."
