Five fire engines and around 30 firefighters tackled a blaze at the Esso petrol station on the A24 London Road at Dorking in Surrey.

The fire service were called at 2.30pm on Tuesday November 19 and were able to extinguish the blaze, which was in the shop, just after 5pm.

Surrey Police said the fire in the shop had destroyed the building’s roof and that two members of staff were treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire caused the closure of the A24 in both directions and led to gridlock in the centre of Dorking. The road was reopened in both directions at 5.30pm.
