A new 20-bay EV charging hub, said to be the largest in the North East, has opened at the Stadium of Light, home to Sunderland AFC.

The hub is in a car park opposite the official Sunderland AFC shop and sits just 100 metres away from the stadium itself. It features 20 ultra-rapid bays, with 16 capable of delivering up to 150kW and four being rated up to 300kW. All 10 of the twin-lead chargers are decked out in the red and white of Sunderland’s home kit.

The facility is the result of a partnership between the football club and Raw Charging, which specialises in destination chargers at retail, leisure and hospitality locations and has been expanding rapidly of late, signing deals with B&Q, and commercial property firm Landsec, amongst others.

Raw has spent £750,000 on the Sunderland hub, which features free electricity on Thursday October 8 and Friday October 9 to drivers using Raw’s app.

Paul Kingsmore, chief operations officer for Sunderland AFC, comments: “By installing a state-of-the-art EV charging hub at the Stadium of Light, we are not only improving the experience for fans and visitors but also supporting the wider transition to cleaner, greener transport in the North East.”

Jason Simpson, Raw’s chief executive adds: “We are delighted to be partnering with Sunderland AFC to deliver the largest EV charging hub in the North East. This project is a major new facility for the city and aligns perfectly with our mission to support sustainable travel. By providing ultra-rapid charging powered by 100% renewable energy, we are ensuring that EV drivers have access to reliable and future-proof charging infrastructure.”
