Topaz, the largest fuel and convenience retailer in the Irish Republic, has bought five petrol stations which were set to close, securing the future of 82 staff.

The company spent €1m on three stations which were formerly part of the Brinkhall group. The stations were located in Athy and Newbridge in Co Kildare, and in Ashford Co Wicklow. A total of 58 people are employed at these sites.

And in a separate deal the company invested €350,000 in two sites in Mullingar and Athlone in Co Westmeath, where 24 people are employed.

Topaz marketing and corporate services director Paul Candon said the company was very pleased to be in a position to expand its network and to protect employment across three counties.

“As a fully Irish owned and managed company we know the importance of job generation and protection, especially in the current environment. We have ambitious plans for all five sites and we are looking forward to providing an excellent service to the local communities where they are based.

“While current market conditions are challenging, Topaz is continuing to grow its business. With turnover at €3bn, 1.8 million transactions every month and a network of 328 sites nationwide employing over 1,600 people we are looking forward to the future with confidence.”
