Both Sainsbury and Tesco plan to open new forecourts in Cardigan, west Wales.
Tesco wants to double the size of its store in the town and create a new petrol station. Apparently the retail giant has bought land near to the store at New Mill Road to provide the space for the forecourt. Company executives have confirmed that a separate planning application will be submitted soon.
Despite outcry from local traders a Tesco spokeswoman said it was important for the community to have a 24-hour petrol service.
Meanwhile, a revised planning application has also been lodged by Sainsbury’s, which includes a petrol station and a 40,000sq ft supermarket.
