Members of the European Parliament are being urged to support a lower limit on the size of packaging for roll-your-own tobacco as part of the Tobacco Products Directive.
MEPs are currently debating whether to increase minimum sizes to 20g or 30g and Priti Patel MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group, has warned that the higher pack size would hit small and independent retailers hard and instead increase illicit sales.
She said: “This Directive will push prices up and will benefit criminals and smugglers at the expense of small and independent retailers.
“Two-thirds of roll-your-own tobacco is sold in smaller 12.5g packs in this country and minimum pack sizes of 30g will limit consumer choice and devastate thousands of hard-working shopkeepers.”
