The Association of Convenience Stores has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of a package of measures to help communities and businesses affected by the recent riots in England.
ACS chief executive James Lowman said: “We called for the extension for claims under the Riot Damages Act from 14 to 42 days in meetings and discussions with the Home Secretary and Business Secretary this week. We are grateful they have listened and have taken this practical step.
“We welcome the fund to support high streets, and the further funding to help repair communities. Retailers have to be at the heart of rebuilding the communities they serve.”
The measures announced by the Prime Minister were:
Any individual, including businesses, will be able to make a claim under the Riot Damages Act - even if they are not insured. The time period to reclaim losses will be extended from 14 days to 42 days.
The representatives of the British Insurance industry have said to Government they will process claims quickly.
There will be a £20 million high street support scheme.
Local councils will be given the ability to offer business rates relief for affected premises.
The liability for council tax and business rates will be stopped.
The weeding out of unnecessary planning regulations, for example making it difficult to install security shutters.
There will be a £10 million fund to help repair communities.
