A forecourt canopy has collapsed onto two cars at the Coalville BP site owned by the Leicester-based Top 50 Indie HKS Retail,
Fortunately the occupants of both vehicles were in the site’s Costcutter store at the time and no one was injured, but both cars were badly damaged.
The incident at the garage in Ashby Road, Coalville, in Leicestershire, happened following a heavy downpour of rain on Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 5.20pm, and a spokeswoman for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The internal structure of a forecourt canopy collapsed onto two cars at a petrol station. There were no persons trapped in the cars or injured. There was no-one in the vehicles when it happened.
“The cause has not been confirmed but it happened after a very big downpour.”
She said crews stayed to make sure the area was safe and left the scene before 6pm.
The site was closed after the incident and was expected to reopen after repairs on Wednesday afternoon.
HKS was ranked ninth in the Forecourt Trader Top 50 Indies 2014, and had 27 sites and annual turnover of £100m when it was published in March.
