PLUG charging static charge units

A rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging solution that does not require a connection to the grid has been launched by Plug Charging.

The company, working alongside technology partner L-Charge, is offering a rapid, off-grid EV charging solution suitable for sites looking for rapid charging services without a grid connection and costly civil works.

The static units, the same size as a storage container, utilise green hydrogen to generate electricity.

The power generated by each unit can charge a minimum of two charging guns at up to 150kwh and can be configured to suit specific requirements.

The system will be supported by an app and provides a full turnkey solution for operators and sites where EV charging was previously not viable.

Jarrad Morris, CEO of Plug Charging, said: “This technology is a game-changer for locations looking at providing EV charging, and we hope it will increase the speed at which we realise a more sustainable transport system. Our solution means that people can charge quickly, conveniently and more sustainably than ever before, giving off-grid or low-grid capacity locations the ability to put in place much-needed EV charging infrastructure, which previously would have been challenging.

“We have already attracted strong interest from motorway service providers up and down the UK, accelerated by the plan set out by the Department for Transport to have at least six high-powered, open-access charge points at motorway service areas in England by 2023. Many of these locations find it difficult to secure big enough grid connections, or the cost of securing them is prohibitive. Our solution addresses both of these problems.”

The company, which launched in the UK in 2022 and has already attracted investment, is set to roll out the new technology, with customer orders now open for 2023 delivery. Some of their key partners for roll out include shopping centres, airports, local authority locations and car park providers.
