While the masked individual’s identity remains a mystery, his generosity was widely appreciated

While generally resident in Gotham City, Batman – or at least someone wearing his costume – has been putting in appearances in the capital, paying for people’s petrol at a southeast London petrol station.

The identity of the caped crusader may not be known, but with unleaded averaging 174.1p a litre and diesel 199.3p, drivers weren’t asking who was mimicking the superhero, but were simply happy to accept his generosity. Batman handed fuel vouchers worth £70 to drivers at the Eltham site, with £3,500 worth given away in total, and queues forming outside the forecourt.

With masked cameramen following him around the site and the Texaco’s pole sign zeroed during Batman’s appearance, the stunt appears to have been organised in conjunction with the forecourt, which could not be reached when approached for comment.

The masked benefactor first appeared in London in September, showing the capital’s residents goodwill by paying their parking fines, helping fill in potholes and handing out fans on the Tube in summer, all while sharing his exploits via TikTok, where in less than a month he has notched up over 15m views across just 10 videos.

Nobody has come forward to claim responsibility for the stunts, but some commentators have suggested Batman’s identity will be revealed alongside the promotion of a social media account.
