Retailers across the country can expect a surge in flower sales in the next few days

Tulip mania may be a thing of the past, but flower sales are set to peak this Mother’s Day, with Co-op predicting it will sell 2.2m stems in the run up to Sunday, a 20% increase on last year.

The convenience retailer isn’t the only firm expecting sales to blossom: earlier this week BP found flower sales rose by as much as 705% in the week leading up to Mothering Sunday 2025, while a single Jet forecourt saw around £85,000 worth of bunches bought over just three days last year.

Co-op says its £8 Fairtrade Bright and Beautiful Mother’s Day bouquet is likely to be its best seller, while also predicting that its Abundance of Tulips bouquet, at £10, will prove popular.

Amy Calcutt, Co-op’s senior buying manager, said flowers are “one of the most meaningful ways for customers to show appreciation and celebrate life’s important moments”, adding: “We’re proud to champion British growers and Fairtrade across our range, bringing customers beautiful blooms they can feel good about.”
