Discount grocery retailer Costco has opened its first standalone petrol station, with the site being separate from one of its main retail stores.
The Westhill forecourt sits on the outskirts of Aberdeen and, unlike other filling stations operated by Costco, is not on the same plot as one of the retailer’s ‘big-box’ warehouse-style shops.
Instead, the new 12-pump-island petrol station is roughly half a mile away from Costco Aberdeen, which opened 26 years ago.
Rather than branching out as a new entrant to the roadside retailing sector, the forecourt’s location was chosen as the Aberdeen warehouse lacks sufficient land to accommodate one of the firm’s vast trademark forecourts.
The US firm operates 21 petrol stations in the UK, typically selling fuel solely to Costco members via pay-at-pump, and at prices that are significantly lower than average.
