Developers seeking to build a new petrol station just off a roundabout on the Isle of Sheppey have been told a pedestrian crossing will likely be needed to provide access to the forecourt, while one local resident branded access plans for the site “downright dangerous”.
Poppyella Holdings is seeking to construct a four-bay filling station complete with parking for 20 cars, spaces for five HGVs, and four EV charging bays at Minster on Sea.
One local resident highlighted that one of the roads served by the roundabout carries over 28,500 vehicles a day, and sees traffic backing up regularly during the week. The commenter also questioned the wisdom of having a petrol station “shoehorned” by a roundabout that was not initially designed to have an extra exit.
The developers have submitted an outline planning application to Swale Borough Council which includes a transport statement highlighting the local area is set to undergo three major homebuilding developments, including one nearby project for 650 houses, furthering the need for a new forecourt.
The transport document projects that traffic is not expected to grow as a result of the petrol station, while the developers say adding a new exit to the roundabout will improve safety by reducing the number of u-turns made by drivers at one of the junctions.
