All indications are that the Treasury will go ahead with January’s planned fuel duty rise

The Treasury has said it intends to follow through with a planned fuel duty rise in January, despite the crisis in the Middle East keeping petrol and diesel prices high.

As things stand, from January 1, 2027 fuel duty will increase by thruppence, from 52.95p per litre, to 55.95p, before increasing by a further 2p in March.

Last month the Petrol Retailers Association wrote to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey, calling on him to extend the 5ppl fuel duty discount that was introduced in 2022 to offset oil-price rises brought about by the Ukrainian conflict.

The Treasury’s reply indicates the Chancellor intends to stick with the increase, however, saying: “As with all taxes, the government keeps fuel duty under review.”
