Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged robbery at a petrol station in Seaham.

Police from Durham Constabulary have confirmed they were called shortly after 4.15am on Sunday, January 23, to the Esso site on Stockton Road, which is owned by EG Group.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and being in possession of a noxious substance and a 23-year-old was arrested on suspicion of robbery.

A member of staff was treated at the scene by paramedics for facial injuries though these are not thought to be caused by acid. It is understood that the employee is in good health.

An EG Group company spokesman said: “We can confirm that an incident took place on Sunday, January 23 at our New Seaham site on Stockton Road, Durham. There is an ongoing police investigation with which we are fully cooperating.”

“We take the welfare of our colleagues seriously, and have a comprehensive colleague assistance programme in place which covers counselling and occupational health.”

Both of the arrested men appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court on Monday January 24.
