One of the rallies will take place at the refinery, at the postcode shown here

The Unite union is hosting a pair of rallies, asking the government to step in and secure the long-term future of the Lindsey oil refinery.

One rally will take place at the troubled refinery on Thursday, August 21, from 11am to 1pm, while another will see supporters march through the nearby town of Cleethorpes on Sunday August 24.

Earlier in the month the BBC reported that two local MPs had claimed a buyer is interested in purchasing the beleaguered refinery, though this has yet to be confirmed.

The Lindsey refinery ceased processing oil at the beginning of the month after its owners, Prax Group, went into administration, putting 420 jobs at risk, and leaving many forecourt operators without a supplier.

Unite has called the rallies to draw attention to the plight of Lindsey staff, and is asking ministers to step in.

The union’s general secretary, Sharon Graham, says the government “must do everything in its power to ensure a sale and safeguard jobs”, and to encourage the sale of the site as a whole to prevent it being split into parts.

Graham says the refinery represents vital national infrastructure and previously provided 10% of the UK’s fuel supply. She adds it is “crucial to the regional economy”, and “its future must be secured”.
